The best way to get a referral is to GIVE a referral!

By giving out referrals you create a lot of social equity with others and that means some of them will reciprocate.

When you meet people you believe could be good contacts for you, focus on capturing more information about them in the contacts database on your phone. Use that additional information to make it easier to locate the right contact when someone asks for a referral.

Here’s how.

Enter people into your database the way others will ask you about what they do. For example, someone may ask you if you know a reputable painter. If your favorite painter’s company is Smith Contracting, they won’t show up when you search for ‘painter’. But the search term needs to be ‘painter’ because that’s what they do! So when you add Smith Contracting to your database, type ‘painter interior exterior’ in the notes.  Include more detail if you have it so you can make the best possible connections.
